Bio

A songwriter/mommy/NYC alt-rocker/educator /animal lover/ music community organizer/real world influencer, the inclusive Val Kinzler is a music warrior that unites people.  This woman is proud to have rocked New York City over the past 40 years.

Val’s upcoming documentary based on her new epic song, “Broken Ballerina” is proof of both her persistence and intuitive creativity, “I strive to share the beauty of my art anywhere they won’t have me & keep rooting for everyone’s inner underdog!”

Legendary boogie-woogie singer/keyboardist Dr. John gave her the heroic name of “Valkyrie,” a mythical Scandinavian warrior woman. “I rescue people. When I was a child, the popular classmates would ask, ‘why do you want to hang out with them?’ referring to the unpopular kids.” Val’s mission is to rescue “war-torn heroes and working class zeroes from the injustices of our times, and reward them with immortality in Valhalla” resonates with her work in music, educational programs, and with “NYC Women Who Rock” on both social media and in person events.

She’s released four albums, “Nothing Sacred About Hatred,” “Resume,” the Genya Ravan-produced “East Third Street,” and “True Love Lies” (which features Ted Horowitz aka Popa Chubby).

Val’s first all-girl band experience was with The Sirens, playing Hammond B3 organ, piano and singing classic rock n’ roll covers at colleges and local bars. While studying jazz piano at Berklee in Boston, and later at Queens College, she majored in theater and enjoyed performing as an actress in plays and as a film/television extra. After dropping out of college, she joined an all-girl punk-pop group, The Technical Virgins played gigs at great punk venues including with Marilyn and The Movie Stars, and The Bad Brains at Maxwells in Hoboken, and CBGBs. One CB’s gig was on Valentine’s Day opening for the Sick F*cks. Her voice and songs caught the ear of Sid Bernstein who became one of her mentors. Val’s pop ballad “Love Won’t Break” was a top 50 semi-finalist in the 1998 John Lennon Songwriting Contest.  In 2014, Val won first place in the Recording Artists Development Singer Songwriter competition which led to various collaborations with Producer Philip Carroll.

NYC’s Women in Music (WIMMIN) awarded Val a Martin Guitars Scholarship to study at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1994.

She created, “Music Cool” for New York City Schools, in response to the atrocities of September 11, 2001.  Teaching tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution skills through role playing, Val and the children’s “Silence The Violence” concert was recorded live and featured alongside performances from “Sesame Street” and “Songs of Love” on WFUV’s City Scape Program.

Val’s NYC Women Who Rock program serves an online community on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, and presents events connected with International Women’s Day, We The She, and Unity in the Community. “One of the keys I’ve always practiced is that rock and roll women should be integrating men into women’s empowerment movements. It sets an example for true professionalism.”  And she adds, singing a hook from her great song, “Rock and roll women need no forgiving!”

Val has opened for and/or shared the stage with Dr. John, Marty Balin, Three Dog Night, Johnny Johnson, Jon Paris and was also chosen to open for B.B. King.

“Today I learned a new word,” Val explains, “sprezzatura—poetry in commotion. My songs might be a little unpredictable, because of the influences. Organized chaos—I’m a range of people! So why do I have to settle into any genre! I’m a songwriter!”

Check out her latest single “Everyday” - an up-lifting anthem addressing terrorism and it’s impact our world.  VKB music is currently distributed by Bongo Boy Records in the U.S., Asia and Europe.

You Tenderly Abuse Me

You tenderly abuse me

Passionately accuse me

Intentionally confuse me

Wholeheartedly refuse me
